Are you taking a break from work and the hassles of life to enjoy our Outer Banks sand, sea breezes, and sunshine? It’s awesome to enjoy these Outer Banks rays, but please do so responsibly. Sunscreen is critical in preventing harmful damage to your skin by the sun. Here are a few helpful hints to help you enjoy your OBX vacation while staying healthy and sun-safe.
According to the American Cancer Society (ACA), “Limit your direct exposure to the sun, especially between the hours of 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., when UV rays are strongest.” An awesome way to limit direct exposure can have you kicked back in our classic beach chair or beach bum beach chair under one of our ultimate umbrellas. Did you know our ultimate umbrella has 100% UV protectant Sunbrella Canvas? Our large and sturdy rental beach umbrellas are a big help in blocking those skin cancer rays, but remember, just because you are in the shade does not mean you should not wear sunscreen. The sun’s rays on the OBX are notorious for reflecting off the water and sand causing indirect sun exposure, so if you’re on the beach, wear sunscreen.
The Outer Banks with its natural charm is the perfect place for watersport activities, too. You can rent one of our stand-up paddleboards for the sound or ocean adventures. We also have double ocean kayaks, single ocean kayaks, single kayaks for the sound, and double kayaks for sound side fun. Ready to get barreled? We rent hard top surfboards and soft top surfboards. All of these gear rentals provide good, clean fun under the sun, but how do you stay sun-safe in the water? The American Cancer Society warns “water-resistant” does not m
ean “waterproof.” The ACA website states no sunscreens are literally waterproof or sweatproof. When a sunscreen claims to be being water-resistant, you will know on the label whether it lasts for 40 or 80 minutes during swimming or sweating activities. Remember, sunscreen usually comes off when you use a towel to dry yourself, so you’ll want to reapply.
Whether you are on land or water, exploring our lighthouses, riding bikes, or riding waves with a bodyboard, it’s always the best route to reapply sunscreen at least every 2 hours and even more often if you are swimming or sweating.
With these helpful hints in mind, you’ll be able to enjoy all the fun the Outer Banks has to offer during your vacation without the worry of the dreaded sunburn.
