Exploring Paradise: Kayaking on the Outer Banks of North Carolina

The Outer Banks of North Carolina, a string of barrier islands stretching for over 200 miles, is a paradise for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. One of the best ways to experience the beauty and tranquility of this unique coastal region is by kayaking. Whether you’re a newbie or seasoned paddler, wanting the ocean or the soundside experience, the Outer Banks offers an array of opportunities for an unforgettable kayaking adventure. Let’s paddle into the few of the reasons why kayaking on the Outer Banks is an experience like no other.

  1. Diverse Ecosystems:

The Outer Banks is known for its diverse ecosystems, making it the perfect paradise for wildlife and nature enthusiasts. Kayaking allows you to fully immerse yourself in this unique environment. Paddle through salt marshes, estuaries, and soundside waterways, where you’ll encounter a variety of bird species, fish, and even the elusive wild horses that roam the area.

  1. Spectacular Scenery:

The breathtaking landscapes of the Outer Banks are a kayaker’s dream come true. The area boasts some of the most pristine and unspoiled beaches on the East Coast. Paddling along the coastline provides stunning views of rolling sand dunes, historic lighthouses, and the ever-changing, picturesque seascapes that make the OBX just so special. Paddling the OBX creates a sense of peace and solitude that’s hard to find anywhere else.

  1. Access to Hidden Gems:

Kayaking opens the door to hidden gems that you might miss when exploring by land. You can reach secluded coves, tranquil inlets, and small islands that are inaccessible by car. These hidden spots offer opportunities for shelling (searching for those unique seashells or sea glass), or simply soaking up the beauty of the Outer Banks without the crowd. Another hidden gem is public launching spots for your kayak. CLICK HERE to read our blog “Top Spots to Launch a Kayak on the Outer Banks”.

  1. Water Sport Variety:

The Outer Banks provides opportunities for a variety of water sports, and kayaking is just one of them. You can easily combine your kayaking adventure with other activities such as standup paddleboarding, surfing, skimboarding and bodyboarding. Between the calm waters of the soundside and the fun wave action on the oceanside, the OBX is an ideal location for water sports enthusiasts of all levels. Ocean Atlantic Rentals rents all of the gear you need for a safe water adventure. When applicable, all of our watersport rentals include life jackets (PFD’s-personal floatation device) and paddles-there’s no extra charge like other companies in the area. If needed, we also separately rent life vests in adult, child and toddler sizes. Ocean Atlantic Rentals also has several watersport value packages to rent that include a variety of watersport gear at a discounted rental rate so your entire crew can enjoy the OBX fun!

  1. Historical Exploration:

The Outer Banks is rich in history, and kayaking allows you to explore the past in a unique way. Paddle around the Manteo waterfront on Roanoke Island. On Roanoke Island the Lost Colony disappeared in the late 16th century. You can also paddle around Hatteras Island which is famous for the Hatteras and Bodie Island lighthouses. These historic landmarks add an educational and cultural dimension to your kayaking time.

  1. Water Trails and Tours:

If you’re new to kayaking, the Outer Banks offers a range of water trails and tours to choose from. When renting your gear be sure to ask our staff for a local recommendation of an expert guide near you who can lead you on eco-tours, birdwatching expeditions, and sunset paddles. This is a great way to learn about the environment and wildlife while ensuring a safe and enjoyable experience. We have stores located in Corolla, Duck, Kill Devil Hills and Avon.

  1. Sunrise and Sunset Paddles:

The Outer Banks is famous for its stunning sunrises and sunsets, and there’s no better way to witness these daily marvels than with a front row seat in a kayak. Paddling out onto the soundside or ocean waters during the early morning or evening provides an epic view to the mesmerizing colors and serenity of our Outer Banks skies. It truly is a beautiful place we call home.

KNOW YOUR GEAR: to be able to experience all of these kayak adventures you need to know what gear is right for what you are doing (fishing, exploring, kayak surfing) and where you are doing it (ocean or sound). We have two models of ocean-specific kayaks available for rent: the Double Malibu 2 Kayak and the Single Frenzy Kayak. For sound side kayaking, we rent the Old Town Double Kayak and the Old Town Single Kayak. These are sit-inside “canoe-style” kayaks that will keep you dry on your touring. NOTE: Paddles and life jackets are included with all kayak rentals.
