Every year, we happily welcome the spring weather and celebrate by getting outside for more activities and beach days. Springtime brings an abundance of local events to help you get out and get active, especially here at the Outer Banks. The Flying Pirate Half Marathon is just around the corner, and another of our favorite yearly events is coming up on or around May 13th – the Nags Head Woods 5k.
This is the anniversary of the race that is held Mother’s Day weekend to make it extra special for many families. Every Mom runner that registers has the option to compete for the title of the Fastest Mom on the Beach! After the race and awards ceremony, head over to the Ramada Plaza Nags Head Beach Hotel for a race party and buffet.
The 5k is on an out-and-back course that starts right in front of the Preserve Visitor Center and runs onto Old Nags Head Woods Road. At the halfway point there is a loop around in an open area and you head back to the start line. The refreshments, results, and awards ceremony are held in the parking lot of the visitor center. There is parking and shuttle transportation to and from the race location by parking by the OBX Bowling Center and Outer Banks Professional Center off of Satterfield Landing Rd. Follow the signs and attendants when you arrive.
Register for the race here. Pick up your runners packet at the Visitor Center the day before the race (Friday, May 12) from noon until 7pm. If running a 5k isn’t enough of a challenge, sign up for the newly added 5k Double. You’ll run the 5k route at 7am with fellow Double participants, and then at 8am, you’ll run it again with all 5k runners.
